Fun Fact: Survivor Social Security benefits for a young spouse continues to grow even if that person has passed 20 years ago! If you or someone you know were widowed many years ago and it’s now time to look at taking Social Security – I suggest that you go to your Social Security Office for a consultation! I did and I found out two things: my late husband’s benefit has grown substantially since he passed in 2000 – and can be taken at my 66th birthday – in full – since I remarried after my 60th birthday and I don’t need to wait until my FRA to take it. Even though I have been working for many years – making more than he did when he passed – his benefit to me is greater than my current benefit. So, I will be taking my survivor benefit now and wait until 70 to stop his and start mine.
Go online SSA.gov and find out what you need to take to the SS office near you. Then make that office visit rather than guess about your benefits.
